Media centre - International

The way we live and work is changing at an international level, but each country has its own particular issues. This section aims to bring together reports and information about the attitudes that different countries have to ideas about 'work-life balance' and the ways in which they are managing changing ways of working and living.

We would like to build up this section with a range of articles and further information. If you have an article you would like to send, taking an international perspective to work-life issues, please contact [email protected]

International
Read this report, (pdf 219kb), by Rhona Rapoport, Suzan Lewis and Richenda Gambles, looking at strategies for change at a global level.

OR look at their summary by country, (pdf 31kb) of the issues they have identified as being important for: India, Japan, the Netherlands, Norway, South Africa, the United States and the United Kingdom.

India
This article, (pdf 37kb), by Melissa Arulappan, looks at the development of the concept of work-life balance in India.

It is an extract from her longer report, (149kb), When It's Work...And Not Life: Work-Life Balance: A Critique, which she wrote as a Chevening Scholar, sponsored by the British Council. This looks at the development of work-life balance in the UK, its effects on employers and employees and then examines the response of Indian industry to the concept of work-life balance.
