Flexible
Working
Practices

Flexible working practices are a defined pattern of working that differ from a traditional nine to five. A more flexible approach to the hours that employees work enable employers to retain valued and skilled staff, for example women returning from maternity leave; allows employers to provide customers with extended service(24hr) and allows work-life balance for employees. Flexible working practices may also attract employees. Many employees interviewed in a recent survey reported that they could compete better for positions if they were offered greater flexibility in working hours(IES, 1997).

Examples of flexible working patterns:

Part-time work Job Share
Teleworking• Flexi-time
• Sabbaticals• Compressed week
